I brought in my late father's Omega pocket watch, which had not moved in at least twenty years. Ahmad Hafiz opened the case in front of me, showed me the condition of the pivots and explained what he was seeing without any pressure. The agreed restoration came back in nine weeks with a written record of every part touched and the timing machine figures at the end. I did not expect to understand the document but he walked me through it. The watch now runs at −4 seconds per day, which he said is within a reasonable range for a movement of that age.

Brought in a diver that had fogged under the crystal after I took it snorkelling. I had assumed the seal had failed completely but after the water resistance service the report said the case-back thread was still holding — only the crown tube had worn. The gasket renewal and pressure test came back at 8 bar, which is the original rating. The one thing I would mention is that the waiting time at drop-off was a bit longer than I expected, though they did call ahead to let me know it might be busy that morning.

I drove from Taiping specifically because a friend recommended the workshop. The inspection and ledger entry at RM 140 was the right starting point — I had no idea whether my grandfather's Swiss cylinder movement was worth restoring. The entry described the condition clearly, noted that one jewel was cracked, and said the mainspring had taken a set. I could make an informed decision about whether to proceed. I did, and the finished work was returned with the original ledger entry and the updated one for comparison.

I use this workshop for annual inspections on three watches I wear regularly. The ledger entries build up over time so I can track how each one is performing year on year. After the second inspection on my Seiko automatic, the entry noted the amplitude was dropping — the watchmaker explained what that likely meant and quoted a service price. Nothing rushed, nothing assumed. I appreciate the consistency more than anything else.

My mother bought a pearl-dial Longines in the 1970s and it had not been serviced in perhaps fifteen years. I was hesitant about cost. The inspection confirmed the movement was in reasonable condition and that a service rather than full restoration would be the right approach. That distinction — between a service and a restoration — was explained clearly and it made a real difference to the decision. The finished result came back on time and within the quoted range.

Teluk Intan, Perak

Water resistance service on a Citizen that I use for outdoor work. The result was recorded as 10 bar, which is what it was originally rated. The workshop was direct about the fact that not every case can be restored to its original rating, and I appreciated knowing that before I agreed to the work rather than after. Simple, professional, no unnecessary additions to the bill.

§ 03 — Case Studies

Three detailed service accounts

CASE 001 · June 2025 · Antique Restoration

English fusee pocket watch, circa 1890

CHALLENGE

The watch had not run in an estimated thirty years. The mainspring was broken, two pivot holes were worn oval, and the fusee chain was corroded at three links. The client had been quoted elsewhere that the movement was "beyond restoration" — a claim made without opening the case.

SOLUTION

Full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, replacement of the broken mainspring with a reconditioned original-grade part, bushing of two worn pivot holes, and individual replacement of the three corroded chain links. Steel parts refinished. Ledger entry noted provenance of each replacement component.

RESULT

Movement running at +8 seconds per day. Amplitude 220 degrees. Beat error 0.4 ms. Duration: 11 weeks from intake to collection, within the agreed 12-week ceiling. Total: RM 820.

"I was prepared to hear that it could not be done. Instead I got a written record of everything that was done and numbers I could verify. That was worth the drive from KL."

CASE 002 · June 2025 · Water Resistance

1990s dive watch with condensation under crystal

CHALLENGE

Persistent fogging inside the crystal after exposure to rain. The client had removed the case-back to air the movement — this had stripped the original gasket and damaged one thread section of the back seat.

SOLUTION

Full gasket renewal including a new crown tube. The damaged thread section on the case-back was assessed — it retained enough bite to hold a new gasket reliably. Dry air test confirmed seat, wet test followed to rated depth. Plain-language note in ledger: the thread wear means future back removals should be minimised.

RESULT

Case tested to 10 bar, holding at 9.7 bar recorded figure. Client advised to return for re-test in 12 months given the thread condition. Duration: 5 working days. Total: RM 310.

CASE 003 · July 2025 · Inspection & Entry

Inherited Swiss automatic of unknown service history

CHALLENGE

Client inherited a mid-century Swiss automatic from an uncle. The watch was running but keeping poor time — losing approximately 3 minutes per day. No service history was available. The client wanted to know whether to invest in a full service.

SOLUTION

Inspection service with ledger entry. Movement found to have dried oil on the pallet stones and low amplitude (160 degrees) consistent with a mainspring not developing full power. Rate: −2 min 48 sec per day recorded on timing machine. Entry recommended a full service as cost-effective given the movement's otherwise good condition.

RESULT

Client proceeded to full service (additional RM 380 quoted and agreed). Post-service entry recorded amplitude 270 degrees, rate −6 seconds per day. Duration: 3 working days for inspection, 5 additional weeks for service. First ledger entry retained as baseline.
